Understanding CO2 and Reducing Emissions with Bardahl Products

What is CO2?

CO2, or carbon dioxide, is a colorless, odorless gas present in our atmosphere. A significant portion of CO2 emissions results from the combustion of fossil fuels. Understanding the role of CO2 in automotive emissions is crucial for environmental conservation.

The Combustion Process and CO2 Emissions

In vehicle engines, when air and fuel mix and burn, carbon dioxide (CO2) and water are produced from the carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in the fuel. There is a direct correlation between fuel consumption and CO2 emissions: a 1% decrease in fuel use leads to an equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions.

Calculating CO2 Emissions Per Liter of Fuel

Typical diesel fuel is approximately 87% carbon by weight. The carbon content in a liter of diesel varies slightly, but it significantly impacts total CO2 emissions. For instance, 1 liter of diesel, weighing about 0.832 kg, contains 0.716 kg of carbon. During combustion, each carbon atom (atomic weight 12) combines with two oxygen atoms to form a CO2 molecule (atomic weight 44), resulting in approximately 2.63 kg of CO2 per liter of diesel.
