Safe lubrication in the food industry

Bardahl has a complete range of food grade oils and lubricants to safely produce or package foods.

All foodgrade oils and lubricants that you will find at Bardahl in the Foodgrade Lubricants Program have an NSF certificate. This means that our oils, greases and lubricants are safe for use in the food industry. If you receive an audit, you will certainly be asked about it. Food-safe lubricants should not only be used in slaughterhouses and bakeries, for example. Think also of wholesalers in meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, and breweries, in the production of chocolate etc.

Of course, it is never the intention to let lubricants and foodstuffs come into contact with each other: this is subject to very strict rules. However, during production processes, lubricants can still end up in food due to numerous factors, such as leakage or careless use.

In addition to certifying the food grade lubricants, we can issue an allergen-free declaration. With this document we specifically indicate which substances are not in the product. Use of Bardahl Foodgrade lubricants in food production guarantees you safe use and also offers you economic benefits.

NSF

The NSF (National Sanitation Foundation), founded in 1944, is an American institute that sets standards and issues certificates for food, water and consumer goods.

The NSF is an independent, non-profit, organization. Check the NSF certificates at any time, for each product, on the official website:NSF.org

    The role of the NSF;
  • Does a product comply with the regulations?
  • Is the formulation and ingredients correct
  • Packaging control and labelling

Food grade lubricants are classified into 3 classes:

H1:

A group of lubricants used in the food industry, when occasional contact of the food is possible. Lubricants with an H1 certificate are composed of substances that have been released by the F.D.A. (Food and Drug Administration). The F.D.A. maintains a so-called positive list (21 CFR 172 878). When a substance is on this list, this means that there is no risk if there is contact with food. Note: The contact of H1 lubricants with food must, of course, be kept to a minimum. This is the amount needed for the machine to work properly. So the lubrication should be sufficient and guaranteed, but not too much.

H2:

EA group of lubricants that are used in locations in the food industry where no contact with food is possible. This applies to the use of lubricants in the same room where production takes place. Note: So there should be no contact with the food under any circumstances.

3H:

A group of lubricants that may come into permanent contact with food. Think of cutting and meat machines (such as corn, soybean or cotton seed oil) that are used to prevent rust on hooks, trolleys and similar equipment.

P1:

A group of greases or lubricants that is suitable for use in food processing but where no direct food contact takes place.

NSF food grade lubricants

Bardahl has had several lubricants certified by NSF. Due to their specific composition, they do not pose a danger to public health if they occasionally come into contact with food. Please Note: despite the fact that the lubricants are H1 certified, contact with food may be limited and in very small quantities. Too much pollution means that the food should not be used for consumption.

TThere is also a dry lubricant that is H2 certified and a universal cleaner A1 certified. A selection from the complete range:

  • 100% Silicone Lubricant is NSF Certified
  • Food Grade Machinery Grease is NSF Certified
  • Food Grade Machinery Lubricant is NSF Certified
  • Food Grade Cleaner Concentrated A1 is NSF Certified
  • Food Grade Silicone Paste is NSF Certified
  • Food Grade TF Dry is NSF Certified
